Das Selbst in der klassischen indischen Philosophie

Dieses Seminar ist einem zentralen Thema der klassischen indischen Philosophie gewidmet: dem Selbst (atman). Schon in den frühen Upaniṣaden wird atman thematisiert. Hier erfahren wir, dass das Selbst ein fundamentales Subjekt für Denken und Erfahrung ist, aber kein mögliches Objekt für Denken oder Erfahrung. Die Verbindung zwischen Selbst und Handlung wird in Texten wie der Bhagavad Gita untersucht. Später in der vedischen Tradition wird diese Vorstellung radikalisiert, vor allem in Advaita (“nicht-dual”) Vedanta, eine monistische Theorie, die alles bis auf das Selbst schließlich als illusorisch einschätzt. Gegen solche Theorien haben die Buddhisten argumentiert, dass das Selbst gar nicht existiert. Die Person hat kein Selbst und keine dauerhafte Existenz, ist vielmehr nur eine Reihe von flüchtigen Erfahrungen und Eigenschaften. In dem Seminar werden Texte aus diesen klassischen Traditionen (oft in englischer Übersetzung, aber auch auf Deutsch, wenn welche vorhanden sind) gelesen und diskutiert.

Kommentar

A reading class devoted to texts on zoology by Avicenna and Ibn Bajja, both of whom wrote works on “Animals” under the inspiration of Aristotle’s zoological writings. In this seminar we will focus on the introductory sections of both works which set out the nature of zoology and its relation to other parts of the Aristotelian curriculum. The original texts will be read in Arabic and participants will take it in turns to translate into English, so competence in both languages is a requirement for taking part in the seminar.

Life of Plotinus, in Greek

In this seminar we will read and discuss Porphyry’s account of his master’s life and intellectual career, the Life of Plotinus. Devoted to praise of Plotinus, the founder of Neoplatonism, Porphyry’s biography reveals much about the dynamic of an ancient philosophical school and also about the ethical worldview and comportment of the ideal sage, as perceived by late ancient Platonists. The text will be read in Greek but an English translation will also be available.

Saadia Gaon (Saʿid ibn Yusuf al-Fayyumi) is among the most important figures of medieval Jewish culture. Renowned as a philosopher, linguist, and Biblical translator and commentator, he integrated themes from Greek philosophy and Islamic theology (kalam) to produce a rational reconstruction of Jewish thought. In this seminar we will read and discuss selections from his works, including his famous Book of Doctrines of Beliefs, in English translation. Knowledge of Arabic is not required, though the original texts will be available for those who are able to read them.
