Jüdische Philosophie von Philon von Alexandrien bis Spinoza

Diese Spezialvorlesung behandelt die Geschichte der Philosophie im Judentum von der Spätantike zur frühen Neuzeit. Sie wird eine Einführung in die Hauptthemen und Quellen (Torah, Talmud und Mishnah) der Tradition anbieten, dann die platonische Philosophie und Bibel-Hermeneutik von Philon von Alexandria vorstellen. Am Ende des Semesters wird eine Sitzung dem neuzeitlichen Philosoph Baruch Spinoza gewidmet. Im Mittelpunkt der Vorlesung steht aber mittelalterliche jüdische Philosophie, vor allem Maimonides aber auch Figuren wie Saadia Gaon, Judah Hallevi, Gersonides und Crescas, und die Autoren der Kabbalah. Wichtige philosophische Themen sind z.B. die Vereinbarkeit der Bibel mit aristotelischer Philosophie; Kritik von hellenistischer Naturphilosophie; Ewigkeit des Universums; Ethik und Gesetz.

Moses Maimonides (1135 – 1204) zählt zu den wichtigsten Vertretern jüdischer Philosophie und übte großen Einfluss auf die mittelalterliche Philosophie des Westens aus. Im Tutorium werden wir Teile seines religionsphilosophischen Hauptwerks Der Führer der Unschlüssigen lesen und diskutieren. Das vielschichtige Werk unternimmt nicht nur den Versuch, die aristotelische Philosophie mit den Grundsätzen der jüdischen Religion zu vereinbaren, sondern setzt sich auch kritisch mit der islamischen Theologie (kalâm) auseinander. Unter anderem werden von Maimonides Probleme in Bezug auf die Anthropomorphismen in der Heiligen Schrift, Fragen der Kosmologie, Prophetie und Gotteserkenntnis sowie des freien Willens oder der Halacha (jüdisches Recht) behandelt. Neben der Lektüre wollen wir uns aber auch Zeit nehmen, Fragen zu klären, die im Rahmen der Vorlesung entstehen.

Plotinus, Enneads 6.8

One of the greatest treatises in Plotinus' Enneads is 6.8, "On Free Will and the Will of the One." Here Plotinus sets out to discover the sense in which the First Principle, or One, is "free" or "wills" the production of all other things. In the process of answering this question he gives a subtle account of the freedom possessed by lesser entities, including us.

Alexander of Aphrodisas, On Providence

In this work, lost in Greek but preserved in two Arabic translations, the great ancient commentator Alexander of Aphrodisias sets out a theory according to which the heavens are the instruments of divine providence. He also seeks to absolve them of blame for evils that occur in the earthly realm. We will translate and discuss the Arabic text.

Averroes' Commentary on Metaphysics Book Lambda

The so-called "Long Commentary" of the great Muslim commentator Averroes (d.1198) is a major text in the history of philosophy, for several reasons. Most obviously, it contains brilliant and incisive discussion of the meaning of Aristotle's text. Also it preserves further commentary from earlier thinkers, particularly otherwise lost material from the greatest ancient commentator on Aristotle, Alexander of Aphrodisias. Finally, the Arabic text can be used as a witness for the textual tradition of the Metaphysics itself. In this seminar we will discuss all three of these aspects, as we examine the Long Commentary on Book Lambda, in which Aristotle presents his philosophical treatment of immaterial substances, including God.

Aristotle's Physics, Book I

We will read and discuss the first book of Aristotle's Physics. This book includes a famous discussion of the number and kind of principles that the philosopher of nature must grasp. It also provides in-depth discussions of the accounts of presocratic philosophers.
