Geschichte der Philosophie I: Antike [zusätzliche Videoaufnahmen]

Kommentar

Diese Vorlesung ist drei antiken Tradition gewidmet: Philosophie bei den Altgriechen, Indien, und China. Nach einer historischen Einführung in alle drei Traditionen werden wir ausgewählte philosophische Themen besprechen, und vergleichen, wie diese Themen in den drei Kulturen behandelt. Z.B. wird die Tugendlehre des Aristoteles mit der Ethik von Kong Tzu (Konfuzius), oder die skeptische Haltung von dem Buddhisten Nagarjuna mit dem Pyrrhonismus des Sextus Empirikos, in einer Sitzung behandelt. Damit werden Studenten gut vorbereitet, vertiefte Themen in der antiken (oder mittelalterlichen) Philosophie rund um die Welt zu verfolgen. Hauptdenker und Strömungen, die abgedeckt werden, sind u.a. Platon, Aristoteles, Stoizismus, Konfuzianismus, Daoismus, Nyaya, Vedanta, und Buddhismus.

In vorherigen Jahren beschäftigte sich diese Lehrveranstaltung ausschließlich mit griechischer antiken Philosophie, besonders mit Platon und Aristoteles. Vorlesungsreihen (aus 2015, 2018) mit dieser Herangehensweise sind noch als Video verfügbar:

Avicenna’s glosses on the De Anima

Notoriously Ibn Sina (Avicenna, d.1037), determined to pursue philosophy in an independent and innovative fashion, did not for the most part write commentaries on the works of Aristotle or other authoritative figures. There are however exceptions, including his comments on Aristotle Metaphysics Lambda and the Arabic Plotinus (Theology of Aristotle). In this seminar we will read selected passages from another set of comments or notes on an Aristotelian work, namely On the Soul. The seminar will engage with the original Arabic text, taking turns to translate into English; thus a knowledge in classical Arabic is required to take part in the course.

Ps-Aristotle, De Mundo

The work On the Cosmos, commonly called by its Latin name De Mundo, is a work on cosmology and natural philosophy, culminating with a discussion of God. It presents itself as a letter to Alexander the Great from his teacher Aristotle. Though this ascription is bogus, the work represents an important and influential contribution to ancient conceptions of divine providence, as well as giving detailed accounts of concrete physical phenomena not unlike (the real) Aristotle’s Meteorology. In this class we will read the entire text in English translation, with reference to the Greek text; thus familiarity with Ancient Greek would be very helpful for participation, but is not required. We will also read selected passages from Plato and Aristotle (e.g. from the Laws and Meteorology) to provide context for the natural philosophy and theology of On the Cosmos.
