Title: The Teacher-Student Relationship in Academic Education at School. A Study in Moral Philosophy.
In my dissertation, I bring together two perspectives on the teacher-student relationship: first, the educational perspective that analyses the role and value of the relationship for academic education at school, and second, the broader ethical perspective that looks at the final value of the relationship. In doing so, I provide a rich ethical concept of the teacher-student relationship that allows for a more appropriate and more comprehensive understanding of the relationship than we have gathered so far. In particular, I elaborate a concept of a good teacher-student relationship that goes beyond a mere functional understanding of “good” by taking into consideration important ethical aspects, such as the morally relevant interests of the relationship’s participants and the final value of the relationship. Moreover, I explain why I consider such a good teacher-student relationship to be necessary for achieving important aims of academic education. With this analysis, I hope to reach the desideratum of a philosophically informed understanding of the teacher-student relationship that takes into account the important ethical dimension and the distinct value of this relationship.
