Lehrveranstaltungen Sommersemester 2019

Ancient Moral Psychology

Seminar und Lektürekurs

Mo. 16:00 bis 18:00 c.t. woch 29.04.2019 bis 22.07.2019 Geschw.-Scholl-Pl. 1 (M) - M 207

In this course we will examine ancient views about the psychological underpinnings of human motivation and practical behavior. In particular, we will investigate the role of character traits, desires and emotions, and reason in our moral understanding, decision making, and action. Some of the central issues to be investigated are weakness of will, virtue and vice, and the nature of moral deliberation. The course focuses on the views of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, and will involve close reading of ancient texts in translation alongside discussion of selected secondary literature. Neither knowledge of ancient Greek nor previous acquaintance with ancient philosophy is required. For those interested in working through selected texts in ancient Greek, an Übung is offered right after the class (Monday 18-19). Instruction will be in English.
Literatur

I recommend purchasing Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics (tr. Broadie and Rowe or Irwin) and Plato’s Complete Works (ed. Cooper). Primary and secondary literature will be made available.
