Kommentar In diesem Kurs werden wir einige grundlegenden Fragen der Sprachphilosophie behandeln, z.B.: (i) die Debatte zwischen "deskriptiven" und "Mill'schen" Theorien von Eigennamen, (ii) definite Beschreibungen, (iii) Berichte über propositionale Einstellungen, (iv) Semantik und Modalität (Notwendigkeit, Möglichkeit), (v) den Unterschied zwischen analytischen und synthetischen Wahrheiten, (vi) die Beziehung zwischen Wahrheit und Bedeutungstheorie, (vii) das Wesen linguistischer Regeln. Der Logikkurs aus dem ersten Semester wird vorausgesetzt, sowie Lesekenntnisse auf Englisch (da möglicherweise nicht alle Literatur ins Deutsch übersetzt worden ist). Wir werden die wichtigsten Primärtexten lesen (Frege, Russell, Quine, Searle, Kripke, Davidsion u.a.). Studenten müssen jede Woche ca. 25 Seiten sorgfältig lesen.
Leistungsnachweis : 4 Essays, die im obligatorischen Begleittutorium (Fr, 12-14) besprochen werden.

Leseübung zum griechischen Text

Kommentar This course will be taught in English. In this course we will read book Theta of Aristotle's Metaphysics as well as recent secondary literature. The topic of this book is the study of one of the four aspects of being which Aristotle considers for separate study, namely, actual and potential being. The other three are being as substance, treated in books Zeta and Eta, which has received the majority of attention, being as truth, which is confined to one chapter, and accidental being, which does not merit separate study. Some of the main questions addressed are the nature of capacities for change, the relation between having a capacity and being something potentially, whether there exist unexercised capacities, and the priority of actuality over potentiality. While ancient Greek is not required, if there are enough students who can read Greek, we may devote one (optional) hour to looking at the Greek text. The translation we will use is: Stephen Makin, Aristotle's Metaphysics Book Theta, Oxford Clarendon. It is also worth owning Jonathan Beere, Doing and Being, Oxford. Additional literature will be provided.

Kommentar This course is restricted to doctoral students in the Munich School of Ancient Philosophy. We will discuss original texts and recent secondary literature with an eye towards improving research methods and writing. In addition, doctoral students will present their work. Topics will vary in accordance with the research interests of doctoral students.
