Michael Esfeld obtained his PhD at Westfälische-Wilhelms-Universität Münster in 1994 and his habilitation at the University of Konstanz in 2000. In 2000, he was appointed lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire and obtained a Heisenberg professorship of the DFG later in the same year. From 2001 to 2002 he was associate professor (C3) of epistemology, philosophy of science and logic at the University of Cologne. Since 2002, he is full professor of philosophy of science at the University of Lausanne.
Michael Esfeld’s main area of research is the philosophy of nature, that is, the quest for a comprehensive understanding of the natural world and the place of us in it, based on the results of science. His research in recent years has focused on the philosophy of physics, in particular quantum physics.
