Dissertation

Arbeitstitel: Educational Relationships (Bildungsbeziehungen)

The dissertation project deals with the normative characteristics of the teacher-student relationship with an explicit focus on epistemic aspects. I am particularly interested in the normative requirements of a relationship that promotes best the students’ acquiring of epistemic competences. My understanding of epistemic competences is comparatively broad and includes all relevant aspects of a person’s epistemic practice. Therefore I refer to virtue epistemology and the concept of intellectual virtues.
In my dissertation I am going to examine the normatively relevant preconditions of the teacher-student relationship, like the epistemic asymmetry between teacher and student that causes forms of dependency and vulnerability. I also substantiate the claim that intellectual virtues should be a central aim of school education. The reflection on intellectual virtues offers insights about the importance of the teacher-student relationship and its significant normative characteristics.
